What are GLP-1 medicines?

GLP-1 medicines help your body control blood sugar and lower your appetite. They help your body release insulin, slow how quickly food leaves your stomach, and reduce the amount of sugar your liver makes.

These drugs are most often used to treat type 2 diabetes. Some brands are also approved to lower the risk of heart-related events or treat conditions like sleep apnea.

GLP-1’s may also be prescribed for other reasons, like weight loss or prediabetes. Medicare Part D does not cover GLP-1 drugs when they are used only for weight loss or for other non-approved uses.

What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary program from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that may help some people get certain GLP-1 medicines for weight loss. This program works separately from your Part D plan coverage and has its own eligibility rules. The program began July 1, 2026, and is expected to end December 31, 2027.

Important things to know about the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program is run by Medicare, not Wellcare.

You are not eligible if you already get GLP-1 drugs covered through your Part D plan or if you have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease.

Current GLP-1s covered under the program include: Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® (KwikPen only), and Foundayo®.

If you qualify, the cost is $50 for a 30-day supply. This cost is separate from your Part D benefits and does not count towards your out-of-pocket expenses.

You don’t sign up for this program. If interested, the first step is speaking with your doctor who can assist with assessing eligibility.

When Part D coverage for GLP-1 medicines may be possible

Some GLP-1 medications may be covered under your Medicare Part D plan when prescribed for a Medicare Part D-covered indication. Coverage depends on your plan's formulary and any applicable utilization management requirements, such as prior authorization, step therapy, or quantity limits. Your doctor may be asked to provide clinical information to support the coverage request if one of these medications is prescribed.

If prior authorization is needed

Your doctor may need to provide medical information to support coverage. Your Part D plan will review the request and send a decision to you and your doctor.
